ABOUT / KEEPAHALO

Wear your protection.

keepahalo is clothing made as a charm, to guard you and the people beside you.

01 / ORIGIN

WHY I MADE THIS

There was a moment when someone I love was being watched and followed by a stranger who wouldn't look away. I stepped between them and held my ground. It's a steadiness I've always had: when I stand up for someone I love, even the most aggressive people tend to back down. I can't be everywhere, though.

I wanted something you could put on and feel covered, not just dressed.

02 / THE NAME

keepahalo

A halo is the light that sits around you.
To keep one is to keep watch, over yourself and over each other.

03 / THE HAND

An ornate hamsa hand with an eye at its center

The hand.

The hamsa is an open hand, palm out, five fingers, usually with an eye set in the palm. Its name is the word for five: khamsa in Arabic, hamesh in Hebrew. It is one of the oldest amulets still in daily use, found on Phoenician and Carthaginian objects long before the faiths that carry it now, and worn across the Middle East and North Africa by Muslims as the Hand of Fatima, by Jews as the Hand of Miriam and by Levantine Christians as the Hand of Mary.

Its job has always been one thing: to meet a hostile gaze and stop it before it lands.

04 / THE FOUR DAGGERS

Keep A Halo mark: four kirpan daggers

The four daggers.

Each blade is a kirpan, the curved dagger that initiated Sikhs have worn since Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699. It is one of the five articles of faith, the Five Ks, and its name is usually read as kirpa, grace, and aan, honour. It is not carried to attack. It stands for the duty to protect anyone who cannot protect themselves and to stand against injustice: the saint-soldier, gentle by default and immovable when it counts.

Four of them make the Keep A Halo mark. Courage turned outward, for the people beside you.

05 / THE WATCHFUL EYE

Lapis-blue nazar, the eye-shaped amulet, with silver ornamental details

The gaze turned back.

The evil eye is the old belief, shared from Greece and Turkey through the Levant, North Africa, Iran and South Asia, that envy can travel through a look and do harm. It is older than any of those countries: Plutarch was writing about it in the first century. The blue glass eye is the answer, the nazar boncuğu of Turkey and the máti of Greece, worn or hung so that a harmful gaze meets an eye staring back and goes no further.

An eye that watches the watcher. That is the whole idea of this brand in one object.

06 / THE SOUND

Silver Om symbol surrounded by a floral mandala

Om.

Om, written Aum, is the primal syllable of the Indian traditions. The Mandukya Upanishad reads it as three sounds and a silence: a for waking, u for dreaming, m for deep sleep, and the quiet after them for the awareness underneath all three. Hindus open prayers and mantras with it; Buddhists chant it, as in om mani padme hum; Jains use it for the five supreme beings of their faith.

It sits in the palm of the Keep A Halo hand for that fourth part: the stillness under the noise.

07 / THE DHARMA WHEEL

An open palm bearing the Jain dharma wheel

The wheel.

An open palm with a wheel in it is the emblem of Jainism, one of the oldest living religions of India. The raised hand means stop: pause before you act, and do no harm. In the emblem the word written in the palm is ahimsa, non-violence, the first vow of the faith, which Jains extend to every living being. The wheel is the dharmachakra, and its twenty-four spokes are the twenty-four Tirthankaras, the teachers who showed the way.

Protection that starts with not being the threat.
